Slopes, Steps, and Split-Levels: Transforming "Impossible" Sites into Perfect Venues

When it comes to marquee hire, the "perfect spot" isn't always a perfectly flat lawn. Whether it’s a steep garden or a complex designer request, we specialize in turning "unusable" land into premium event spaces.

Using our advanced Floor Stack System, we create rock-solid, perfectly level foundations regardless of what’s happening on the ground. Here are two examples of how we’ve conquered the gradient recently.

Case Study 1: The "Split-Level" Dining & Dancefloor

Last year, we were faced with a significant challenge: a garden with a one in five slope. Over a 21-meter stretch, the ground dropped so sharply that the far end of our structure was nearly 2 meters off the ground.

To manage this safely and aesthetically, we didn't just build a high platform—we created a multi-level experience.

  • The Upper Level (12m): We started at ground level, extending the cassette flooring 12 meters to create a tiered dining area.

  • The 1m Drop: At the 12m mark, we engineered a vertical drop, transitioning from 3m legs to 4m legs so the roof apex remained perfectly level throughout.

  • The Lower Level (9m): This became the dedicated DJ and dancefloor area.

  • The Finish: We installed bespoke steps and glass balustrades to bridge the levels, ensuring guest safety without sacrificing the "open plan" feel.

Case Study 2: Multi-Directional Slopes & Designer Layouts

Sometimes, the challenge isn't just a single slope, but ground that falls away in multiple directions. We recently worked with a planner who requested a split-level interior specifically to define the different zones of the event.

In this instance, both the dining and reception areas began at ground level. However, as the ground dipped:

  • The Interior Drop: At the 21m mark, we dropped the floor by 400mm for a 9m dance area.

  • The External Decking: We wrapped the entire length and the gable end of the marquee with a custom decking area.

  • The Service Wing: Because the ground dropped away in two directions, the adjacent 9m x 21m service tent (housing catering, toilets, and the green room) sat approximately 1 meter lower than the main structure.

To tie it all together, we manufactured bespoke steps to allow seamless access between the main marquee and the service tent, as well as multiple access points from the decking at various heights around the perimeter.

Engineering Meets Imagination

Whether we are following a planner's vision or overcoming a 1 in 5 gradient, our system allows for:

  1. Level Rooflines: We use varying leg lengths to ensure the marquee looks perfect from the outside, even if the floor is stepping down inside.

  2. Zoned Environments: Split levels naturally separate the "quiet" dining areas from the "high-energy" dancefloors.

  3. Total Accessibility: With custom-built steps and safety balustrades, we ensure that even a 2-meter drop feels like a natural part of the architecture.
